Liverpool admit defeat in race for Sanchez

Liverpool have been forced to admit defeat in their pursuit of Barcelona forward Alexis Sanchez, who looks set to join Arsenal instead, the Liverpool Echo has reported.

With last season’s top scorer Luis Suarez expected to move to the Nou Camp, Liverpool were hoping that Sanchez would move in the opposite direction, but club officials have been unable to convince the Chilean into moving to Anfield, and they now seem resigned to losing him to rivals Arsenal.

The Gunners have reportedly agreed a fee of around £34m with Barcelona for Sanchez, who is also being targeted by Italian champions Juventus. It was left to the player to consider his options, and his representatives have returned to inform Liverpool that the Emirates Stadium was his preferred destination, as he and his family favoured the idea of living in London.

This represents a major blow to Liverpool, with Suarez now set to move to Barcelona in a straight cash deal, although they are close to signing Lille striker Divock Origi and Benfica winger Lazar Markovic.
