Man Utd step up Hummels interest
Manchester United are to open talks with the representatives of Borussia Dortmund and Germany defender Mats Hummels as they look to bring him to Old Trafford this summer, according to the Daily Star.
New manager Louis van Gaal wants to build his defence around Hummels when he takes over the reins at the 13-time Premier League champions after the World Cup. The Red Devils are aiming to bolster their defensive options after seeing long-serving duo Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic both leave at the end of last season.
They have now sounded out Hummels’ camp to find out if the 25-year-old would be open to a move to United. On Monday, sources close to the player refused to rule out a deal, although the lack of Champions League football on offer could prove to be a hindrance in the negotiations.
United are looking into the availability of Hummels after suffering a difficult summer transfer window in 2013, when they failed in bids to sign Cesc Fabregas and Fabio Coentrao among others. Van Gaal is a big admirer of the player, who he wants to sign alongside Arsenal’s Thomas Vermaelen.
