Poyet: Altidore will be fit for Premier League start
Sunderland Coach Gus Poyet is confident striker Jozy Altidore will be fit for the start of the Premier League season despite picking up an injury during the World Cup, BBC Sport has reported.
Altidore was representing the United States but suffered a hamstring injury in his country’s first group game, against Ghana, and couldn’t recover in time to play again in the tournament. The United States got to the Round of 16, where they were eliminated by Belgium, after getting out of a group containing finalists Germany, Portugal and Ghana.
“I am sure, if nothing goes wrong, when Jozy is back with us for pre-season, he is going to be fit to start training without any problems,” Poyet is quoted as saying.
Altidore was brought to the Stadium of Light last summer by then-Coach Paolo Di Canio, but struggled for goals in his second spell in the Premier League. Altidore, who had previously played in England’s top flight while on loan at Hull City, made 39 appearances in all competitions for the Black Cats, but could only score twice.
