Aston Villa set to offer Vlaar new contract

Aston Villa are set to offer a new contract to captain Ron Vlaar as they look to ward off any potential interest in the central defender, the Daily Star has reported.

Ron Vlaar

Vlaar has been a standout performer for the Netherlands at the World Cup, delivering a particularly outstanding display in Wednesday’s semi-final with Argentina, although he later saw his penalty saved in the shootout that decided the tie.

His performances in Brazil have seen his stock rise, and his national team boss Louis van Gaal has been linked with making a move for the 29-year-old once he takes over at Manchester United. Promoted Queens Park Rangers are also said to be in the running should Vlaar leave Villa Park.

With only a year left on his current contract, there is uncertainty surrounding Vlaar’s future, with Villa still yet to be sold by Randy Lerner since he put the club up for sale in May. The American has turned his attention back to the Premier League side, however, and could finance a new deal for Vlaar.
