Enrique excited by Liverpool tour
José Enrique is looking forward to Liverpool’s participation in the International Champions Cup and believes it will be of great benefit to the Reds, according to the club’s official website.
Liverpool travel to the USA to participate in the tournament in which they will face Olympiacos, Manchester City and AC Milan. They will also play a pre-tournament friendly against Italians AS Roma, and face a potential fifth match should they top their group and progress to the final.
Spanish full back Enrique is very happy with the calibre of opposition the tour will offer the Anfield club, seeing it as ideal preparation for the start of the Premier League season. “That's for the best, to play these types of teams,” he said.
“When you are competing in the league, to have competed against the best teams in pre-season, when [the Premier League season] comes you are not just relaxed and you have already competed against good teams. So I think it's really good news to play these teams before the season starts.”
Enrique is back in training for the first time in 2014 after a long injury lay off. The 28-year-old left back last pulled on a Liverpool jersey in a 4-0 Premier League victory over Fulham at Anfield in November 2013, marking his ninth and final appearance of the season. To date he has made 87 Liverpool appearances in all competitions since joining the Reds from Newcastle United for a fee of £5 million in August 2011.
