Hull City midfielder David Meyler has set his team the minimum target of reaching the group stages in their first foray into European competition, reports The Hull Daily Mail.

The Tigers enjoyed one of the best seasons in their history in 2013/14 as they reached the FA Cup final, before being beaten 3-2 by Arsenal in a memorable Wembley encounter. Hull had led the tie 2-0 before disappointingly being overrun by the Gunners, but received a consolation prize in the form of a place in the Europa League for this coming season.

Irish international Meyler is relishing the prospect of facing European opposition, saying: “I see it as a great opportunity to play against new teams. I know the Premier League is our bread and butter but I feel as though we can use the Europa League to our advantage. It'll be great for us.”

Hull enter the competition at the third qualifying round stage, with their first tie due to take place on Thursay 31 July. Their opponents will be confirmed when the draw is made next week.

The club’s maiden participation in European competition is something to look forward to for the players. “We're all excited about it,” said Meyler. “Reaching the group stages has got to be the minimum aim. That's what it's all about.”

Like many of his team mates, Meyler, who joined Hull from Sunderland late in 2012 initially on loan before securing a permanent move, enjoyed a highly successful season in 2013/14. He scored four goals in 40 appearances in all competitions, and also made himself more of a fixture in Martin O’Neill’s Ireland squad. He now has five caps for his national team after playing all three of Ireland’s summer friendlies against Turkey, Italy and Portugal.
