Man Utd rivalling Chelsea in race for midfielder Song

Manchester United are battling to sign Barcelona defensive midfielder Alexandre Song, but must compete with Premier League rivals Chelsea for his signature, according to the Daily Star.

Alexandre Song

Louis van Gaal is still looking for a new defensive midfielder as he attempts to overhaul the squad at Old Trafford, and he believes that the former Arsenal man can play in the position currently filled by Michael Carrick.

Since leaving North London for Barcelona in the summer of 2012, Song has struggled to establish himself as a regular in the first-team, with the Spanish international trio of Sergio Busquets, Xavi Hernandez and Andres Iniesta having been preferred. As a result, he has made just 39 appearances for the Spanish club.

Despite having John Obi Mikel, Nemanja Matic and Ramires at the club, Chelsea are also registering an interest, but for any deal to be done involving either Premier League side, Barcelona would have to lower their asking price. They currently want £20m, but Chelsea and Man Utd feel that is excessive.
