Man City on verge on signing Mangala
Manchester City are set to sign highly-rated FC Porto defender Eliaquim Mangala for a fee of £32m, with the deal set to be announced in the next few days, reports the Daily Telegraph.
Mangala has been a long-term target for the Premier League champions, who have already signed his Porto teammate Fernando in a £12m deal earlier in the summer. Manuel Pellegrini’s side tried to sign Mangala back in January, but were unable to meet the Portuguese club’s asking price.
Chelsea were also in the running to sign Mangala, but were unwilling to meet the asking price, leaving City to claim hold of one of Europe’s most highly thought of central defenders, and he is set to replace Martin Demichelis as first-choice partner to captain Vincent Kompany.
The 23-year-old did go to the World Cup with France, but was not given any playing time by boss Didier Deschamps, who went with Laurent Koscielny, Mamadou Sakho and Raphael Varane ahead of him.
He has had a hugely successful time with Porto since joining in the summer of 2011 from Standard Liege, helping the club to two league titles, and scoring 11 goals in 91 appearances.
