Varane emerges as Chelsea target
Chelsea could make a shock swoop for French Real Madrid star Raphael Varane, according to the Daily Star, after he impressed at the World Cup.
Varane appeared in all five of France’s games in Brazil and turned out some strong performances for Les Bleu, and while team mate Paul Pogba won young player of the tournament, has impressed former manager Jose Mourinho.
The Portuguese manager took the defender to Real Madrid from Lens back in 2011 in an £8m move and once hailed him as the ‘best young central defender in the world’ – he is now valued at over £20m.
And according to Spanish paper Marca, Chelsea have made tentative approaches for the 21-year-old who is said to be considering his options if he doesn’t see more first team action at the Bernabeu.
Carlo Ancelotti preferred to pair Pepe alongside Sergio Ramos at heart of the Madrid defence and Varane is said to be unhappy at being third choice.
While the Italian will not want to lose the youngster he would find it hard to stand in his way should the player decide he wants to leave.
And Chelsea will be on the lookout for another centre back having parted with David Luiz for a whopping £50m to Paris saint Germain.
