Vermaelen’s Man Utd move in doubt

Tuesday 15 July 2014

Defender Thomas Vermaelen’s proposed move from Arsenal to Manchester United is in some doubt as the Gunners are looking for a deal which would see a player move in the opposite direction, reports the Daily Telegraph.

Thomas Vermaelen

The Belgian is one of new Man Utd boss Louis van Gaal’s main transfer targets this summer, and it was previously suggested that Arsenal would be willing to allow him to move, but their preference is for a deal involving at least one United player moving to the Emirates Stadium, with Chris Smalling mentioned as a possible makeweight.

For such a deal to take place, things would depend on van Gaal’s willingness to accept Arsenal’s preference, as well as which player or players the North London club would be happy to exchange for their club captain.

Vermaelen is third-choice central defender at Arsenal at present, and as a result, his opportunities have become limited over the last year and-a-half. With Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny having struck a successful partnership, most of the 28-year-old’s starts have come in the domestic cup competitions.
