West Ham have confirmed the signing of Ecuador World Cup striker Enner Valencia, subject to a work permit, according to the club’s official website.

Valencia moves to the Hammers from Mexican side Pachuca and the club’s statement claims West Ham beat a number of Europe’s top clubs to his signature. The fee is officially undisclosed and Valencia has signed a five-year contract.

The 25-year-old scored three times for Ecuador at the World Cup but couldn’t help the South Americans into the knockout stages. La Tri were in Group E, alongside France, Switzerland and Honduras.

Valencia has made 13 appearances for his country, scoring seven goals, including three at the World Cup. He made his international bow in 2012 and began his club career at Emelec in 2010.

Spending a single season at Pachuca, Valencia scored 18 goals in 23 appearances and was also top scorer in the Copa Sudamericana, the South American version of the Europa League.

West Ham have this summer signed Mauro Zarate on a free transfer, Aaron Cresswell from Ipswich Town, Senegal midfielder Cheikhou Kouyate and Charlton’s Diego Poyet.
