Stoke closer to deal for Liverpool’s Assaidi

Stoke City manager Mark Hughes is hoping to strike a deal to bring winger Oussama Assaidi back to the Britannia Stadium, according to The Daily Star.

The 25-year-old spent the 2013/14 season at Stoke on loan from Liverpool, and Potters boss Hughes is hopeful that a permanent transfer can now be completed.

Assaidi, who scored five goals in 25 appearances in all competitions for Stoke last season, will not come cheap, however, as he is rated at around £7 million. After initially failing to reach an agreement, the two clubs are reportedly back in discussions, and it is thought a deal could be struck whereby Liverpool will receive £4.5 million immediately and a further £2.5 million in add-ons later.

Recognising Assaidi’s talents, Hughes said: “Ossie's someone we know and someone we know can have an impact. But, obviously, he isn't our player and that means the ball is in Liverpool's court at the moment.”

Assaidi joined Liverpool from SC Heerenveen in 2012, but was unable to claim a first team place, making just a few starts in the Capital One Cup and Europa League, alongside four Premier League appearances all as a substitute. He has also been capped three time by the Moroccan national team.

It has been well documented that Stoke are in the market for wide players after Matty Etherington, Michael Kightly and Jermaine Pennant all departed the Britannia Stadium. Bids for Norwich City’s highly rated Nathan Redmond have been rejected, with the Canaries holding out for a fee of over £6 million.

“It's fair to say we have to look to try to bring a bit more strength into that area of the team,” acknowledged Hughes.
