Arsenal must spend big to sign Carvalho
Arsenal must make an offer of at least £24m up front if they are to have any chance of signing Sporting Lisbon midfielder William Carvalho, according to the Daily Telegraph.
Reports in Portugal have suggested that the Gunners did make a bid of £24m, but wanted the fee to be stretched over two payments. As a result the offer was rejected, but there is a good chance they can land the 22-year-old for a fee below his release clause of £35m.
Carvalho is one of most highly-rated defensive midfielders in Europe, and Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is keen to strengthen that area of his team. He also has an eye on World Cup winner Sami Khedira and Bayer Leverkusen star Lars Bender.
Sporting only own 60% of Carvalho, ensuring they are determined to receive a full transfer fee up front, for a player who helped them secure Champions League football for next season. In his time in the Portuguese capital, he has made 34 appearances and scored four goals.
Despite being at the club for three years, last season was his first as a regular in the Sporting side, having spent time on loan in Belgium with Cercle Brugge. He has also been linked recently with Manchester United.
