England manager Roy Hodgson has paid tribute to former captain Steven Gerrard, after he announced his retirement from international football on Monday, BBC Sport has reported.

Gerrard ended his England career after earning 114 caps, and captaining the side at the last three major tournaments. He suffered disappointment at the World Cup in Brazil, as he led the Three Lions to their first opening round elimination since 1958 as they finished bottom of a group containing Uruguay, Costa Rica and Italy.

Hodgson, who had previously managed Gerrard in his ill-fated spell in charge of Liverpool, swiftly appointed the 34-year-old as captain upon being appointed in May 2012, and now the England boss has admitted that his presence will be missed by the national team.

"We shall miss his leadership qualities as we look ahead with a youthful group," said Hodgson. "He is an incredible man and fantastic footballer who we have all been blessed to see in an England shirt so often.

"It is never by coincidence that people reach such a staggering figure as 114 caps. It is a mark of his wonderful talent allied to a huge drive and determination to live up to the highest standard. I wish him all the best in the future, although I know I can count on his continued support and influence as a helpful presence moving forward."
