Southampton are preparing to make an increased offer for Celtic goalkeeper Fraser Forster, after their initial bid was turned down, according to Sky Sports.

The Saints’ opening offer - believed to be in the region of £3.5m, was described by the Scottish club as ‘derisory’ on Tuesday. Celtic rate the 26-year-old former Newcastle United youngster highly, and may demand up to £10m.

Forster has spent the last four seasons at Celtic, the first two of which on loan, and he has become a key player in helping the club make the knockout stages of the Champions League in 2013, and win three consecutive Scottish league titles. Last season, he set the record the most games without conceding a goal, with 13 shut-outs in a row.

His performances for Celtic have brought him into the reckoning for England, and he was part of the squad for the World Cup as third choice goalkeeper behind Joe Hart and Ben Foster, but did not feature in any of their three matches.

New manager Ronald Koeman is looking to improve his goalkeeping options at the St.Mary’s Stadium, with Artur Boruc the current first choice ahead of Paulo Gazzaniga and the experienced Kelvin Davis. The Dutchman has already signed midfielder Dusan Tadic and striker Graziano Pelle so far this summer.
