Lampard to complete New York move

Chelsea midfield legend Frank Lampard is in New York to finalise a deal with new MLS franchise New York City FC, reports The Daily Mail.

Frank Lampard

Lampard was spotted arriving at the city’s JFK airport with a press conference called to unveil him as City’s latest star addition to their burgeoning squad, after the capture of Spanish international striker David Villa from Atletico Madrid.

The domestic season in the United States does not get underway until March next year, and as such a short-term loan move is a likely possibility for the England man. It has already been confirmed that his new team mate Villa will play the next few months in Australia’s A-League with another Manchester City-owned franchise, Melbourne City.

Comments from Lampard’s former Chelsea colleague, Australian international goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer seem to suggest that Melbourne is the likely loan destination for Lampard too.

New York City were created in 2013 in a joint deal between the English Premier League champions Manchester City and baseball powerhouse the New York Yankees. They will compete in MLS for the first time in 2015, and will initially play their home games at the imposing Yankee Stadium while a purpose built arena is being constructed nearby in the Bronx.

Lampard moves to America after a trophy-laden 13 years at Stamford Bridge in which he scored 211 goals in 649 appearances in all competitions for the Blues, and became one of only eight players to have won more than 100 caps for England.
