West Ham United striker Andy Carroll could be out of action for up to four months after damaging ankle ligaments in training, Sky Sports has reported.

The Premier League side are currently on a pre-season tour of New Zealand, and Carroll was left out of Wednesday’s defeat to Wellington Phoenix as a precaution after feeling pain in his left ankle, and he has since undergone scans which have determined the extent of the damage. He will now have surgery on Friday.

It represents a major blow to West Ham’s preparations ahead of the new season. Manager Sam Allardyce sees the former Newcastle United and Liverpool star is crucial to their chances of achieving a top half finish, but now he will be forced to turn to the likes of Carlton Cole, Modibo Maiga, or new signings Mauro Zarate and Enner Valencia to take Carroll’s place in the team.

This is the second successive year in which Carroll has sustained a long-term injury in pre-season, with a foot injury keeping out until January. He problem limited him to just 16 appearances last season.

After receiving the news on Thursday evening, Carroll said on Twitter: "Going under the knife tomorrow morning and absolutely devastated to be missing the start of the season,"
