Mourinho: Drogba belongs at Chelsea

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has claimed that Didier Drogba “belongs” at Stamford Bridge as he continues his pursuit of the Ivory Coast striker, according to BBC Sport.

Mourinho and Drogba

Drogba has been told by his current club, the Turkish giants Galatasaray, that he is free to leave, and Mourinho is giving serious consideration to bringing the striker back to Chelsea, where he enjoyed eight highly successful seasons between 2004 and 2012.

But Mourinho insisted that any move would be strictly for footballing reasons, with all emotional and nostalgic thoughts put to one side. “If I bring him back, and the decision has to be made soon, it is because as a player he has qualities to make the team stronger,” said the Portuguese coach.

“If you bring him back it is not because he is Didier or scored the most important goal in the history of Chelsea, or because I read I need an assistant, no,” Mourinho went on to say. “We want to win matches and win titles and Didier is one of the best strikers in Europe. He is still very adapted to the needs of the Premier League and we are thinking about it in a non-emotional way.”

The goal he referred to was of course the late equaliser Drogba netted against Bayern Munich in the 2012 Champions League final, ultimately taking the match to a penalty shoot out in which Drogba also scored the decisive kick.

The Champions League win proved the perfect end to a glittering chapter in the career of Drogba and the history of Chelsea, in which Drogba also played a vital part in securing three Premier League titles, four FA Cups and two League Cups.

Since leaving Stamford Bridge following the Champions League victory Drogba spent a brief period in China before settling in Istanbul with Galatasaray. But he was voted by Chelsea fans as the club’s all time greatest player, and has spoken of his love for the club.

“Because we know his heart is pushing him to where he feels he belongs, we are thinking about the possibility [of re-signing Drogba]. We feel that Didier belongs to us,” said boss Mourinho.
