Cech ready to fight for his Chelsea place

Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech has insisted he will not be satisfied with a place on the Chelsea bench during the current season, reports Sky Sports.

The 32-year-old Czech Republic international played his first game for several months this week in a friendly in Austria after recovering from the dislocated shoulder injury which forced him to miss the end of last season.

Cech has been Chelsea’s first choice between the posts since joining from Stade Rennais for £7 million in 2004. But he now faces serious competition for his place following the recall of Belgian World Cup star Thibaut Courtois after three years on loan with Atletico Madrid.

“Every year there is a challenge,” said Cech. “If you are going to be in the team you are going to have to do better than the other guys in the team. I think Mark Schwarzer, when he came last year, did remarkably well during the pre-season and when he played in any game he did very well, so I knew the challenge was there.”

The 6ft 5in giant has made 479 appearances in all competitions for the Blues in his 10 years with the club. The tally could have been higher were it not for several serious injuries, most notably the life-threatening fractured skull he sustained in a challenge by Reading’s Stephen Hunt in 2006, as a result of which he still wears a distinctive head guard.

While his performances in recent times have been characterised by some high profile mistakes, Cech, who also has 107 international caps, still feels he has plenty to offer, and will fight for his place in Jose Mourinho’s team.

“I don't want to be on the bench. This is why I am trying to do everything to be in the team. I don't want to talk about ifs and buts. Let’s see how I am going and what happens,” said Cech.
