Collison chases QPR deal

Welsh international midfielder Jack Collison is hoping to impress enough during a trial spell with Queens Park Rangers to earn himself a contract, according to Sky Sports.

Jack Collison

Collison is currently a free agent after being released by West Ham United at the end of last season. He joined the Hammers as a 16-year-old but has endured a torrid time, particularly in recent years, as a succession of injuries have blighted his career.

QPR manager Harry Redknapp has invited Collison along on the club’s pre-season tour of Germany, where the midfielder hopes he can do enough to secure a contract for the coming season.

Speaking of his reasons for taking Collison on tour, Redknapp said: “I brought the boy in because I like him, he is a fantastic boy. He's got a chronic knee problem, it must be terrible so if I can help get him fit, I will. People have told me what a great lad he is and I knew he didn't have anywhere to train so I wouldn't say no to him. He is going through a lot and he is a real good player but his knee is horrendous, it's not fair.”

Collison acknowledged the gesture and opportunity, and expressed his hopes that the trial could lead to greater things. “If I come here and do well, then you never know what can happen but I'm also just trying to get myself fit,” he said. “There's no pressure, it's a fantastic club and at the moment I am just grateful to have the opportunity to train with some good players and a fantastic manager.”

Collison hopes to be given the opportunity to play some friendly matches for Rangers as he bids to get back into the game. But even if Redknapp does not give him any time on the pitch, or a contract with the club, he hopes that the exposure of being involved with a top flight side will lead to something.

“If I do well in a couple of games then you never know. But, if not, then I will have at least got some fitness and maybe some games and everyone is aware of my situation,” said Collison.

Collison made 121 appearances in all competitions in his seven years with West Ham, and played nine Championship games last season in loan spells with AFC Bournemouth and Wigan Athletic. He also has 14 caps for the Welsh national team, who he qualifies to play for through a grandfather.
