Sunderland have completed the signing of Chelsea defender Patrick van Aanholt, who has penned a four-year deal to play under Gustavo Poyet at the Stadium of Light, Sky Sports has reported.

Gustavo Poyet

The 23-year-old left-back had been at Chelsea since 2007, when he joined from PSV Eindhoven at the age of 17. However, in seven years with the club, he made just eight appearances for the first team as struggled to provide significant competition to Ashley Cole.

He has spent the last two seasons back in the Netherlands with Vitesse Arnhem in order to gain more experience and playing time. He made 84 appearances for the club, scoring seven goals and contributing 10 assists. As a result of his good form, he was named in the provisional Dutch squad for this summer’s World Cup, but did not make the final cut.

Van Aanholt now becomes Sunderland’s fourth new signing of the summer after right-back Billy Jones, midfielder Jordi Gomez and goalkeeper Costel Pantilimon. He now fills the problem left-back area at the North East club, with loanee Marcos Alonso and experienced Italian Andrea Dossena both having left the club at the end of last season.
