Lescott targets England recall

Defender Joleon Lescott hopes that the prospect of playing regular football at West Bromwich Albion could help him regain his place in the England setup, the Birmingham Mail is reporting.

A lack of first-team action at previous club Manchester City saw Lescott miss out on selection for this summer’s World Cup, with the likes of Vincent Kompany, Martin Demichelis and Matija Nastasic having been preferred by manager Manuel Pellegrini at the Etihad Stadium.

He left City on a free transfer at the end of last season and has since moved to the Hawthorns, where is more likely to gain regular football, although he has stiff competition in the shape of established pair Jonas Olsson and Gareth McAuley. And Lescott believes that the chance to play more often at the West Midlands club will give him a chance of making a first international appearance since March 2013.

He said: “Me not being involved with England is because I wasn’t playing regularly for Manchester City, but I’m confident that if I play to the best of my ability and maintain high standards then I have a chance of getting called upon.

“I would never give up on playing for England – that simply isn’t an option – and it’s not out of the question because Ben’s in the squad. I’ve not spoken to Roy Hodgson. There’s been no conversation but it’s something I’m keen on. That’s one of my aims this season but obviously I know I have to be playing regularly and that will be a big challenge for me.”
