Liverpool complete Lovren signing
Liverpool have completed the signing of Southampton defender Dejan Lovren for a reported £20m, with the Croat having signed a five-year contract, writes the Daily Mirror.
Lovren becomes the third Southampton player to make the move to Anfield this summer, after Rickie Lambert and Adam Lallana. It comes after a long transfer pursuit by Liverpool, which resulted in the player publically announcing his desire to leave the South coast after only one season.
He impressed with his organisation and leadership qualities in the centre of the Southampton defence as he forged a successful partnership with Jose Fonte. He helped the club to equal their best ever Premier League finish of eighth place after moving to England from Lyon.
For Liverpool, it ends a mixed weekend in the transfer market as they saw their move for Queens Park Rangers striker Loic Remy fall through, but the arrival of Lovren does add more quality to a defence which conceded a disappointing 50 Premier League goals last season.
Upon the completion of the deal, manager Brendan Rodgers said of his latest acquisition: "He is very commanding and has great leadership qualities. He's a front foot defender. He's aggressive, he goes and attacks the ball. He's a good character and he can play. But first and foremost a defender has to be able to defend and he can defend."
