Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini has said that striker Stevan Jovetic will become a key player for his side as he enters his second season with the club, Sky Sports has reported.

Stevan Jovetic

The Montenegro international arrived at the Etihad Stadium from Fiorentina last summer in a £22m deal, but did not make many appearances due to persistent injury problems. The excellent form of fellow strikers Sergio Aguero, Edin Dzeko and Alvaro Negredo also hampered his chances of breaking into the side.

As a result, he managed only 18 outings last season, scoring six goals, but after netting twice in a 5-1 friendly victory over Milan, Pellegrini is confident that Jovetic will be an important player for the Premier League champions in the season ahead, which they begin with the Community Shield against Arsenal on August 10.

"Stevan had very bad luck last year,’ said Pellegrini. ‘He had a lot of injuries and it's very difficult for a player to really have an important performance when he can't play three games in a row.

"This year he's started pre-season well, and if he continues to work every day, he will demonstrate why he's here at Manchester City. He's a very good player. Maybe there are a lot of rumours about his future but Stevan will stay here."
