Everton manager Roberto Martinez has made his second signing of the summer, completing a deal on Monday for Ferencvaros midfielder Muhamed Besic, the Liverpool Echohas reported.

The 21-year-old arrives on a five-year contract for an undisclosed fee, believed to be in the region of £4m. It comes following his strong performances for Bosnia & Herzegovina at the World Cup, where he caught the eye despite their exit at the group stage, breaking up the play and protecting his defence.

He now joins fellow new signing Gareth Barry in arriving at Goodison Park, ensuring there is plenty of competition for places in the Everton midfield, with Darron Gibson and James McCarthy also at the club.

He leaves Ferencvaros after scoring once in 50 appearances for the Hungarian side over two seasons, and Martinez said: “Muhamed is a young footballer who has developed massively in the last two seasons. He has been playing as a centre-half and as a defensive midfielder at an incredible level.

“What he did with Bosnia and Herzegovina in the World Cup, he showed that he is a really mature footballer, that he covers the ground really well, that he is very dynamic and technically very gifted. He is bringing us really good strength in an important part of the side.”
