Arsenal midfielder Abou Diaby is hopeful that he can avoid picking up another serious injury in the new season as he prepares to make his latest comeback to the first-team, the Independent has reported.

Abou Diaby

Diaby has been an Arsenal player since the summer of 2006, but has suffered badly with injury throughout his time in North London. In the last three seasons combined, he has made just 21 appearances, and the Frenchman has admitted that he considered retiring from the game.

When asked if he had thought about retirement, Diaby said: “Yeah. Sometimes it crossed my mind, but my love of football is so big that I just couldn’t quit. I am still young and now that I have an opportunity to play again I want to take it. I try to be positive all the time and that has helped me to come back.

“It’s great to be playing again. Now I just hope I can keep like this and continue. My knee is feeling good, I have been working hard on my fitness and strength.”

The 28-year-old is now on course to return to competitive action when Arsenal face Crystal Palace on the opening day of the Premier League season, August 16, having played in both of their pre-season games so far. He will now go on to feature in the annual Emirates Cup friendly tournament.
