Atletico Madrid to make Kagawa enquiry

Friday 01 August 2014

Atletico Madrid are to make a formal enquiry to Manchester United over the availability of playmaker Shinji Kagawa, for whom they are considering a £14m bid, according to the Daily Express.

Shinji Kagawa

The Japan international has had a frustrating time since he moved to Old Trafford from Borussia Dortmund in the summer of 2012, finding himself moving in and out of the starting XI and falling behind the likes of Juan Mata and Wayne Rooney in the pecking order to play behind the main striker.

In his two seasons at Man Utd, the 25-year-old has made only 56 appearances and scored six goals, all of which coming as he helped the club to the Premier League title in 2012-13. New Red Devils boss Louis van Gaal has already remarked upon the number of options he has to play in Kagawa’s position, describing his squad as unbalanced.

Dortmund have spoken about the possibility of making a bid to bring Kagawa back, but the Spanish champions are the current favourites to land his signature, with manager Diego Simeone looking to recover from the setback of losing key quartet Diego Costa, Thibaut Courtois, Filipe Luis and David Villa.
