Liverpool close in on Manquillo and Moreno
Liverpool are close to finally completing the signing of Sevilla’s Alberto Moreno, as well as Atletico Madrid’s Javi Manquillo, according to Sky Sports.
Liverpool’s pursuit of Moreno has been a lengthy one, with numerous bids, rumours, and counter-rumours abounding. Sevilla’s unwillingness to lower their asking price for the 22-year-old left back had appeared to be an insurmountable stumbling block, but now it seems the Reds are willing to break the £20 million barrier to secure his services.
Seville native Moreno has to date played only for his hometown club, and has made 45 La Liga appearances since making his debut against Athletic Bilbao in April 2012. He also played 14 times in Sevilla’s victorious Europa League campaign last season. Despite his inexperience, his talent was rewarded with a call-up to the Spanish national team, and already has three senior caps.
Manquillo meanwhile is expected to join Liverpool on loan for a period of two years, with an option of completing a permanent transfer for a fee of around £6 million.
Right back Manquillo, aged 20, like Moreno is another player representing his hometown club and yet to play anywhere else. To date he has made just 17 appearances in all competitions for Los Rojiblancos, though that includes European experience. He was a member of the Spain squad that won the 2012 UEFA European Under-19 Championship.
Liverpool chief executive Ian Ayre is reportedly currently in Spain to finalise the deals for the two young defenders.
