Chelsea boss Mourinho in warning to Cech

Sunday 03 August 2014

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has warned goalkeeper Petr Cech that he expects him to fight to regain his place in the team should Thibaut Courtois start the new season as first choice, the Daily Mail has reported.

Petr Cech

Cech has now been Chelsea’s No.1 goalkeeper for 10 years, seeing off competition from the likes of Carlo Cudicini and Henrique Hilario thanks to his hugely consistent form between the posts, which have helped the club to three Premier League titles and the Champions League among other major trophies.

However, Courtois has finally arrived at the club to fight for his place in the Blues team. Having been signed by Andre Villas-Boas in the summer of 2011, he has spent three consecutive seasons on loan at Atletico Madrid, and has earned rave reviews. Last season he helped them to the Spanish league title and to the final of the Champions League.

He is now thought to have a good chance of being picked ahead of Cech for the opening Premier League match at Burnley on August 18, and Mourinho has urged Cech to battle hard to win his place back should that be the case. He said: ‘If I have to put Courtois on the bench, it is not a problem. The fact that we have two fantastic goalkeepers is not a problem for me. It was logical that Courtois had to be back.

'It would make no sense to have such a great young keeper and not have him back. In the end it will be my decision and nobody else’s. ‘They have to work hard and wait for my decision, then fight against my decision if they are on the bench.’
