New Man Utd system working, believes van Gaal
Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal is confident the new formation he has implemented is working after they continued their impressive pre-season with victory over Real Madrid, Sky Sports has reported.
Two goals from Ashley Young and a late strike from Javier Hernandez were enough to hand Man Utd a 3-1 victory over the European champions in Miami, adding to wins over Los Angeles Galaxy and Italian runners-up Roma.
All of those results have been achieved with van Gaal’s new 3-4-1-2 formation, similar to the one he employed while manager of the Netherlands as he guided them to third place at the World Cup. And after the game, the 62-year-old told of his delight at the success of the new system.
"It's amazing that you can pick up a new system like that," he said. ‘It's not a new system for Juan Mata, Wayne Rooney or Danny Welbeck, who play in their position, neither is it a new system for the two midfielders. The greatest impact with this new system is on the back line. It's amazing we had one chance against us in the first half, and two in the second."
