Southampton eye move for Man City midfielder Rodwell
Southampton are set to take on Italian club Napoli in the race to sign out-of-favour Manchester City midfielder Jack Rodwell, according to the Daily Star.
New Saints boss Ronald Koeman is looking to rebuild his squad after seeing five key players leave during the transfer window, with less than two weeks to go until their Premier League opener at Liverpool. The Dutchman may see Rodwell as a possible replacement for departed captain Adam Lallana.
However, the 23-year-old has been monitored by Napoli throughout the summer, and they are expected to register their interest with an £8m offer. Manager Rafael Benitez believes that the former Everton star can help see them progress to become title contenders in Italy, and Rodwell is reportedly tempted by the prospect of a move to Naples.
He has become something of a forgotten man at City since he was signed for £12m in the summer of 2012. Occasionally hampered by injury, manager Manuel Pellegrini struggled to find room for Rodwell in his plans last season due to the presence of Fernandinho, Javi Garcia and Yaya Toure, and he is now believed to be open to a sale.
