Arsenal stakeholder Alisher Usmanov has told of his belief that the club can begin a new era of winning trophies, the Daily Telegraph has reported.

The club ended a nine-year wait for silverware by coming from two goals behind to beat Hull City at Wembley in May and win the FA Cup. They have also spent heavily over the past year, breaking their transfer record to sign Mesut Ozil on transfer deadline day last summer, and then splashing out this time around to claim the signature of Alexis Sanchez from Barcelona.

Despite the money spent, the club are in a hugely stable position financially, and Russian billionaire Usmanov believes that the club can claim major honours over the coming years. He said: “The club is very well placed to succeed. I think we begin a new era for Arsenal where we win trophies. That is most important for football.

‘In my opinion, in line with the existing rules, the club has the correct decision-making process in place, including their selection policy, especially now, when they have the means to buy the best players.”

He also went on to state the Arsenal are no longer in a position to sell their best players, as they have in recent years with Cesc Fabregas, Samir Nasri and Robin van Persie, and that he has not spoken to majority stakeholder Stan Kroenke since they began their battle for control at the club in 2007.
