Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has said that he hopes that playmaker Philippe Coutinho will sign a new contract extension with the club, Sky Sports is reporting.

Philippe Coutinho

The Brazilian was brought to the club from Inter in January 2013 and has gone on to make a massive impact at the Reds thanks to his passing ability, technique and improving work rate. Last season he was a key figure in their title challenge, making a total of 37 appearances in all competitions and scoring five goals.

Rodgers sees the 22-year-old as an important player in the club’s long-term future and is hoping that he can sign a new contract, with the player having been offered one in recent days. "I am not sure when it will be done," said the Northern Irishman.

"I haven't spoken to any of the directors in the last few days so I am not sure where we are on that, but obviously he is someone we want to tie up for a period of time. I am sure I will hear more about it when I get back on Tuesday."
