French attacking midfielder Remy Cabella has insisted that he and his new Newcastle United team are capable of winning a trophy this season, reports Sky Sports.

The Magpies have famously gone trophy-less in England for almost 60 years, with their last piece of domestic silverware being the 1955 FA Cup, their sixth and last triumph in that tournament. They were last crowned champions of English even further back, in 1927.

But Cabella has described the positive mood in the Newcastle camp as the new season approaches, saying: “There is a good feeling in the team at the moment and my adaptation is good. I hope we can win a cup this season. We play to win a trophy.”

The 24-year-old Corsican joined Newcastle this summer after five years with Montpellier. After a year out with a cruciate knee ligament injury and a season on loan with AC Arles-Avignon, he finally made his Montpellier bow in August 2011 and made 29 Ligue 1 appearances that season as La Paillade became French champions for the first time.

Cabella scored his first Newcastle goal in last weekend’s 3-1 friendly win against Bundesliga powerhouses Schalke 04. “I am very happy to score and get a win for the team. I have only been training for four or five days but it was a good victory and the team is happy,” said Cabella.

Cabella, who has signed a six-year contract with the Magpies, has one cap for France and was a member of their 2014 FIFA World Cup squad, although failed to make an appearance during the tournament.
