Any proposed move for Arturo Vidal from Juventus to Manchester United is hitting a stumbling block as Louis van Gaal has doubts over the long term fitness of the midfielder, the Daily Mail is reporting.

It is believed that a £47m fee has been agreed in principle between the two clubs but the new United boss appears hesitant at spending big money on player with a recurring injury problem.

Vidal had to undergo knee surgery on cartilage in May and was rushed back for international duty as Chile made the last 16 of the World Cup.

And according to his national coach this is what is holding up any deal, and claimed the player was playing at ’30 or 40 percent’ during his time in Brazil.

Jorge Sampoli said: “I know that the main problem in Vidal’s $80m (£47m) transfer from Juventus to Manchester United is Louis van Gaal’s doubt over the improvement of Arturo's knee.”

The move has been speculated about for most of the summer with Van Gaal keen to reinvent the United squad inherited from David Moyes.

However with the start of the Premier League next weekend it is unclear where the deal now stands.

In the meantime the player is part of Juventus’ pre-season preparations in Asia where the club is on tour currently.
