Man City ‘still confident’ of signing Mangala

Manchester City are still optimistic they can complete a deal to sign FC Porto defender Eliaquim Mangala for around £32m, according to BBC Sport.

Eliaquim Mangala

Despite seeing his side concede the second fewest number of goals in the Premier League last season, City boss Manuel Pellegrini has been intent on signing a central defender this summer to form a partnership with captain Vincent Kompany. Frenchman Mangala has been heavily on his radar and is expected to sign for the club in the coming weeks.

In July, a video was posted on the Man City club website appearing to suggest the deal had been done to bring Mangala to the Etihad Stadium. However, the completion of the move has been delayed by the 23-year-old’s third-party ownership, although that has not worried City.

Mangala was in the French World Cup squad, but did not play at all as his teammates reached the quarter-finals. He has been at Porto for three years and has won two Portuguese titles, establishing himself as one of the most highly-rated defenders in Europe, making 91 appearances and scoring 11 goals.
