Man Utd to make £15m Vermaelen bid
Manchester United are set to make a £15m offer for Arsenal defender Thomas Vermaelen as they look to beat Barcelona to the signing of the Belgian, according to the Daily Mail.
Vermaelen is willing to end his five-year spell at Arsenal this summer after falling out of favour due to a successful central defensive partnership between Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker. Barcelona made a £10m bid on Tuesday, and as a result United are ready to come in with a better proposal.
Arsenal would prefer to sell Vermaelen to Barcelona, rather than a Premier League rival, but the player is reportedly favouring a move to Old Trafford and the chance to work with Louis van Gaal, who hopes to have the deal wrapped up before the start of the new league season on August 16.
The Red Devils also hope to complete a deal for Ajax utility player Daley Blind, who was a key player for van Gaal as he guided the Netherlands to third place at the World Cup. Meanwhile, the manager is keen to decide the futures of several other players including Marouane Fellaini and Shinji Kagawa, who are expected to leave.
