Sunderland boss Poyet still hopeful over Borini

Sunderland manager Gustavo Poyet is still hopeful that he can complete a deal to sign Liverpool striker Fabio Borini before the transfer deadline, BBC Sport has reported.

Fabio Borini

Borini spent last season at the Stadium of Light on loan and scored seven goals as the club made a late escape from the prospect of relegation to finish 14th in the Premier League. Poyet has attempted to bring back the Italian on a permanent basis, and made no secret of his desire to do so.

The Black Cats have already agreed a fee - thought to be around £14m - for Borini, only for a shoulder injury to slow things down. On Thursday, Poyet insisted that the deal is still on and that he is still working hard to sign Borini, and that he has not looked at any alternative options.

"We will keep working because we know him very well. I am still confident it will happen," he said. "We knew that after the injury it would take a little bit longer," Poyet added. "The longer it goes, of course you start looking for other options, because you have to - that's my job. But every time you take a step forward in something, you stop because we want Fabio."
