Tottenham boss Pochettino backs Lamela

Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino has backed winger Erik Lamela to show his quality this season and put his difficult first year at the club behind him, Goal.com is reporting.

Erik Lamela

Lamela became Tottenham’s record signing in August 2013 when he arrived for £30m from Roma. However, he struggled to adapt to living and playing in England, which resulted in him being regularly left out of the team. Overall last season he made only nine Premier League appearances, while his only goal came in the Europa League.

The competition for places at Spurs in attacking midfield and wide areas is still high, but Pochettino believes that Lamela can produce the form which encouraged the club to break their transfer record for him. He said: "[There is the] Erik Lamela you know and [the one] we know from Argentina and Italy, but he is still young and the Premier League is the most difficult league to play in - in terms of the style, the language and to adapt.

"Now, after one year at Tottenham, we think and we believe that Erik is ready to show his quality. My philosophy is to give a freer style with good organisation. Not only with Erik but also with other players - and they are unbelievable players - on the ball to create a different action.’
