No pressure on Lambert says Rodgers
Despite failing to score during preseason Brendan Rodgers has told Rickie Lambert there is no pressure on him, the Daily Star has reported.
Lambert moved to his boyhood club in a £4m deal from Southampton at the start of the summer and has been told by his new manager that the pressure is off him in the coming season.
And Rodgers is adamant that he will prove to be a valuable addition to his ever changing Liverpool squad.
Rodgers said: “Don’t worry about Rickie or put pressure on Rickie Lambert to get goals.
“Rickie Lambert has been brought in here to be a very valuable member of our squad.
“He is a good guy. He works hard and his role will become more prominent throughout the season as we play.
“All through his career he has got goals at whatever level he plays at. He came on for England and got goals. At Southampton in the Premier League over the last couple of seasons he has got goals.”
The 32-year-old joined Southampton in a deal worth just over £1m back in August 2009 when the club were in League One.
On the club’s rise back to the Premier League he made 235 appearances for the Saints and scored 117 goals during his five year stay.
In an interesting stat, Lambert has only failed to score two penalties out of 68 during his career – last missing in 2009.
Lambert also managed to finish the top scorer across all four English top flight divisions for two seasons in a row in 2008-09 and 2009-10, scoring 29 and 31 goals respectively.
