Rooney named as new United captain
New Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has named striker Wayne Rooney as his captain for the coming season in a move many expected following the departures of Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic, Sky Sports is reporting.
Rooney skippered his side during their final preseason game against Valencia, which ended in a 2-1 victory, and it was announced by Van Gaal that he would retain the armband for the coming season – the Dutchman had been handing the captaincy to a number of different players throughout the summer.
He takes over from Vidic after the Serb parted for Inter Milan on a free transfer, while Darren Fletcher has been named as vice-captain.
Upon receiving the captaincy at the club Rooney expressed his delight and honour to have been named.
He said: “It is a huge honour for me – and for my family – to be named captain of this great club. It is a role I will perform with great pride.
“Team spirit has always been very high in our dressing room and I am very grateful to the manager for the faith he has shown in me.
“I look forward to leading the team out on Saturday at our first match of the new season."
Van Gaal explained that his choice of captain was very important to him and hailed the attitude of his new man ahead of the new season.
With Rooney picking up the United captaincy many are heavily tipping him to also become skipper of the national team following Steven Gerrard’s retirement from England duty.
