Negredo faces Champions League axe

Manchester City striker Alvaro Negredo is facing the axe from his side’s Champions League squad thanks to his current long term injury and restrictions imposed on the club, the Daily Star is reporting.

Negredo is currently side lined with a broken metatarsal picked up during City’s preseason game against Scottish side Hearts, and faces being out of action until the end of September at least.

Meanwhile the club have been told they must select 16 home grown players for their Champions League squad thanks to sanctions imposed by UEFA following their breach of the Financial Fair Paly rules.

These two combined elements have worked against the Spanish striker as it appears manager Manuel Pellegrini is prepared to cut him.

The arrival of Eliaquim Mangala means Pellegrini must get rid of a foreign star from his current Champions League crop, and with Javi Garcia set for a move away from the Etihad the axe will fall on Negredo’s head.

The move will ramp up speculation the striker, nicknamed ‘The Beast’, will leave the club in January despite arriving just last season.

The player had insisted he wanted to remain at City before his injury when speculation mounted of a departure, and despite scoring 23 goals in all competitions in his debut campaign, could be deemed surplus to requirements thanks to the imposed sanctions.
