Everton have completed a deal to sign Chelsea forward Christian Atsu on a season-long loan, announcing the transfer on Wednesday evening, ESPN has reported.

The Ghanaian’s arrival comes after several weeks of negotiation, with Chelsea reportedly asking for assurances from their Premier League rivals that he would be given the chance to play regular first team football at Goodison Park before sanctioning the move.

Atsu is likely to serve as a replacement for Gerard Deulofeu, who spent last season on loan at Everton from Barcelona. Manager Roberto Martinez was initially intent on bringing back the Spaniard, but he is likely to play an active role for Barcelona this season.

The 22-year-old, who is still yet to play for Chelsea since joining last summer, represented his country at the World Cup, and was delighted to complete his move to Merseyside. He said: "I'm very happy to be joining Everton because it's a great club, which likes to play football, and it's a great pleasure to be here. Playing in the Premier League has always been a dream for me and I have achieved that dream.

"This is the biggest level for me to play at. I know that it's a very competitive league and I believe with hard work we're going to be successful this season."
