West Ham end interest in Wickham

West Ham United have ended their interest in Sunderland striker Connor Wickham after seeing a final offer of £5m rejected, according to

Sky Sports.

The Hammers have been searching for a new striker in recent weeks since receiving the news that first choice front-man Andy Carroll will be out for up to four months after picking up an ankle injury during pre-season. They have also been linked with Stoke City’s Peter Crouch and Portuguese marksman Hugo Almeida.

An initial bid of £4m was rejected by Sunderland, and the Black Cats turned down the second offer because they are looking to recoup the £8m they spent to sign him from Ipswich Town in the summer of 2011.

Wickham only has a year left on his contract and has been warned that he could be sold this summer should he not agree terms on a new deal, but manager Gustavo Poyet is keen to keep him at the Stadium of Light after seeing him inspire the club to Premier League safety last season.

“There has been an offer for Connor but he is a player we want to keep,” he said. “He was a massive part of our miracle last year. He showed he is ready to play in the Premier League and I am looking forward to playing him this season.

“He’s had a great pre-season and if we started the season now he’d be in the starting line-up. I will try my best to keep him. He’s a very important part of our plans.”
