Sterling to be offered new Liverpool deal

Liverpool are planning to offer wide man Raheem Sterling an improved contract with speculation mounting that Real Madrid may be interested in securing his services, according to The Daily Mail.

Sterling still has three years remaining on his current contract, worth £30,000 a week, but Liverpool could now offer him an extended deal at a significantly higher salary.

The Jamaica-born 19-year-old was famously snapped up by Liverpool from Queens Park Rangers’ youth academy when he was just 15, and already tipped for greatness.

He made his senior debut for the Reds in 2012, and at 17 was the second youngest player in Liverpool history. To date he has made 77 appearances in all competitions for the Anfield club, scoring 12 goals.

Sterling benefitted from a rule change that allowed him to represent England rather than his native Jamaica, having been educated in the UK for more than five years.

He now has seven senior caps, and was one of the few players to distinguish themselves in England’s short and disappointing World Cup campaign in Brazil. His performances attracted the interest of La Liga giants Real Madrid, and they are now said to be monitoring his progress closely.

But Liverpool rate the teenager highly and are keen to hang on to him for the considerable future.

“This kid is only going to get better. He’s way above the level from when he first came in,” said Reds manager Brendan Rodgers. “Tactically, technically, and what has been beautiful to watch with Raheem has been his maturity. He’s turning into a beautiful young man, with all the responsibility. He’s still only 19, but in big games he’s performed and he’s a wonderful talent.”
