Jose Mourinho believes Chelsea will this season rival the likes of Manchester City for the Premier League title but Sky Sports reports he stopped short of saying his side will end the season as champions.

Chelsea finished in third place last season, four points behind table-topping City, and Mourinho feels that the signings the club has made over the summer will help him attempt to close the gap.

But the Portuguese isn’t expecting an easy ride, predicting one of the more open campaigns of recent times. “We bought some key players and we feel these players have brought the squad into another dimension,” he said. “We are title contenders but if you are expecting me to say we are going to win the Premier League, I cannot say this.

“I have to respect this competition and in terms of country’s championships, this is the only one with more than two contenders,” Mourinho continued. “There are five or six.”

Chelsea begin the season away at newly-promoted Burnley and Mourinho added that the Clarets will pose a stern test upon their return to the top flight. “I want to win against Burnley - that is the first step,” he confirmed. “To win against Burnley will be very hard.”

Mourinho’s squad now contains former Atletico Madrid pair Filipe Luis and Diego Costa, who won the title in Spain last year, and goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, part of Atletico’s title-winning team but on loan from Chelsea. Former Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas has also arrived from Spain, quitting Barcelona to return to London.
