Martinez taking long-term approach at Everton

Roberto Martinez is using a long-term approach to his stewardship of Everton, insisting that it’s important to consider the ramifications of decisions made today, Sky Sports has reported.

Roberto Martinez

Martinez has been in charge at Goodison Park for a little over 12 months, having been appointed from Wigan Athletic to replace Manchester United-bound David Moyes. He took the Toffees to fifth place last season but has said he isn’t thinking year-to-year but rather looking at the bigger picture.

“You need to manage the club as if you are going to be here for the next 100 years and you need to make decisions in the younger age groups where you develop them even if you are not going to see them - although the club will eventually get the benefit,” Martinez said.

“Every manager should work in that manner,” he continued. “You are not looking at the short-term doing everything and anything to win a trophy and then move on. I have never got satisfaction from that, I get satisfaction from trying to build clubs and philosophies that last.

“Whatever happens with the manager, for good or bad reasons, you want to have the long-term continuity and vision that is shared by everyone.”

Everton begin the new season with a visit to newly-promoted Leicester City on Saturday, having lost to the Foxes in a pre-season friendly played in Thailand. Gary Taylor-Fletcher scored the only goal of the game.
