Man Utd in £24m Benatia bid

Manchester United have made an offer of £24m for highly regarded Roma central defender Mehdi Benatia, according to the Daily Express.

Mehdi Benatia

The Moroccan is reportedly a target for Premier League rivals Chelsea and Manchester City, as well as German champions Bayern Munich. The sporting director of Roma, Walter Sabatini, is said to have held talks with United and Chelsea over a possible deal.

The Red Devils are desperate to sign a central defender in the remaining weeks of the transfer window, due to their lack of options in that area of the pitch. They are yet to replace experienced duo Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic, while manager Louis van Gaal was forced to start with youngster Tyler Blackett in the opening day defeat to Swansea City.

Roma are fearing that Benatia could leave before the transfer deadline, but are hoping to receive a fee closer to £30m for a player they only signed last summer. The 27-year-old was instrumental in helping the club achieve second place in Serie A in 2013-14, scoring five goals in 37 outings.
