Mourinho ready to hand Courtois number one spot

Jose Mourinho looks set to offer Thibaut Coutois the chance to make the Chelsea goalkeeping spot his own in what will be his first senior appearance for the club, the Telegraph is reporting.

Thibaut Courtois

Petr Cech has been the club’s number one for 10 years but will drop to the bench for the first game of the season as Mourinho gives the 22-year-old Courtois the chance to impress.

The Belgian shot stopper has spent the last three years on loan at Spanish side Atletico Madrid – who Chelsea were knocked out of the Champions League semi-finals by last season, and made it clear he would only consider a Chelsea return if he was to play first team football.

And barring any last minute hitches the Portuguese boss will give him his wish and the opportunity to establish himself as the Blues number one.

Cech will not be content with a place on the bench at Stamford Bridge, with clubs such as Paris Saint Germain and Real Madrid said to be monitoring the 32-year-old’s situation, but Mourinho stated he does not have to explain his decisions individually unless asked.

He said: “If they need to speak to me individually, obviously I never refuse that, but I never give individual explanations."

“My number one will be my number one. Not forever obviously because I cannot kill competition.

“I cannot close the door for someone into the team. I cannot give any player a guarantee that he is in the first team forever if he doesn't perform.

“Obviously, you don't change a keeper if he makes a mistake, but you can change him if he makes five. What is my first-choice today might not be my first-choice tomorrow. But if the goalkeeper gives stability to the team I don't feel I need to change or to play one in one competition and one in another.”
