New signings delight Chelsea boss Mourinho
Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has heaped praise on summer signings Diego Costa and Cesc Fabregas after they made an immediate impact, helping the side to a 3-1 victory at newly promoted Burnley on Monday, Sky Sports has reported.
Having fallen behind thanks to an excellent strike from Scott Arfield, Chelsea hit back when Costa smashed in from close range. Fabregas then produced a sublime pass to pick out Andre Schurrle, who put the title favourites ahead.
Costa was then controversially booked for diving before Branislav Ivanovic turned in the third from a corner kick. After the game, Mourinho hailed the impact of the duo, both signed from La Liga. He said: “We had control of the game and in some moments we had the quality and style which we want to play.
“You gave Cesc the man of the match and I completely agree. He was the maestro and controlled the tempo of the game with (Nemanja) Matic. He dictated the speed and intensity of the game
“Diego did something very important for us which was the first goal. His movement and interaction with Eden (Hazard), Oscar and Schurrle was very good, although I feel sorry for him because it was a penalty and never a yellow card.”
Mourinho also went on to state that he hopes goalkeeper Petr Cech will stay at the club, despite having been dropped in favour of Thibaut Courtois, who finally made his first appearance since joining in 2011. The Belgian now looks set to be first choice for the foreseeable future.
